Why Do Custom Products Have a Minimum Order Quantity (MOQ)?
You've picked out the perfect wristband, lanyard, or enamel pin design for your event. You send your artwork over and ask for a quote. Then you see it: a minimum order quantity (MOQ) you weren't expecting. Maybe you only need 20 pieces for a small team. But the supplier says the lowest they'll go is 50, or even 100.
That number isn't random. A minimum order quantity exists because every custom order has fixed costs. These costs don't shrink just because your batch is small. Artwork proofing, machine setup, and buying materials all take roughly the same time and money at 20 units as they do at 2,000. So suppliers set a floor quantity. Below that floor, the order stops making financial sense for them.
Once you understand what drives that number, MOQ stops feeling like a wall. It starts looking like something you can work with, or work around, to get a better deal.
This matters more in Singapore's promotional products market than you might think. Many custom items enamel pins, molded silicone wristbands, some apparel get made overseas and shipped in as one batch. Freight and import costs pile onto the same fixed-cost list as setup and tooling. A supplier bringing in a shipment for a 40-piece order faces almost the same freight and customs work as one bringing in 400 pieces. That's a big reason why local suppliers who stock blanks and print in-house can often offer lower MOQs than suppliers who rely entirely on overseas molded production.
What Does MOQ Mean for Custom Products?
MOQ stands for minimum order quantity. It's the smallest number of units a supplier will produce or brand in one order. Say a lanyard supplier sets an MOQ of 50. That's your floor. You can order 500 or 5,000 at that price and process, but you can't order 30.
People often mix up MOQ with a bulk discount. They're not the same thing. A bulk discount lowers your per-unit price as your quantity goes up. MOQ is a separate question: will the supplier even take the order below a certain size? Some products have both a hard MOQ floor and tiered pricing once you clear it.
Blank, off-the-shelf items are different. A plain tote bag or a stock notebook usually has no MOQ at all, because nothing needs to be custom-made. The MOQ conversation really starts the moment your logo, artwork, or brand colors enter the picture.
Why Custom Products Need an MOQ
Here's the question that actually matters if you're planning an event. What is the supplier paying for that a small order doesn't cover?
Setup and tooling costs
Screen printing needs a screen made for your exact design. Enamel pins and silicone wristbands need a mould or die built from your artwork before a single unit exists. For hard enamel pins, cutting and finishing that metal die alone can take days. Embroidered patches need the design turned into a digital stitch file first, mapping every color change and stitch direction. None of this setup time shrinks for a smaller order. The mould still gets built. The screen still gets burned. The file still gets digitized. That work happens once per design, no matter how many pieces roll off the line afterward.
Artwork proofing and color matching
Before production starts, a supplier checks your file for resolution and bleed, then matches your brand colors to the material. That might mean Pantone matching for enamel, thread color matching for embroidery, or ink mixing for print. A logo with three brand colors could need three separate color checks before the first pin is even cast. That review takes a fixed chunk of staff time, no matter the order size. It's usually where a good free design service earns its keep: catching problems before they turn into an expensive reprint.
Raw material purchasing
Suppliers usually buy blank stock wristband material, lanyard webbing, pin blanks, and PVC card sheets in set lot sizes from their own suppliers, often overseas. Breaking a lot down to fill a tiny custom order isn't always practical. Nickel and brass pin blanks, for example, only come in fixed sheet sizes.
Machine calibration and production runs
A production line takes roughly the same time to set up for 50 units as it does for 500. Someone has to align the print bed, test the ink flow, and run a few trial pieces to check everything lines up before the real batch starts. Once the machine is calibrated, the cost of each extra unit drops fast. That's exactly why bigger runs get rewarded with better pricing.
Labor and quality control
Someone still has to inspect the batch, check the colors match, and pack the order. That holds at 30 pieces as it does at 3,000. A quality checker looking for scratches on 50 enamel pins spends nearly as long as one checking 500, just with fewer pieces to show for it. Inspection is more of a fixed cost per order than a per-unit cost.
Packaging and fulfillment
If your order needs individual polybags, header cards, or branded boxes, that step often has its own separate minimum. Sometimes it's even higher than the product MOQ. This catches people off guard more than anything else on this list; it's easy to assume the product MOQ is the only number you need to worry about.
Put these six factors together. It's clear why a heavily customized item, say, a multi-color enamel pin with an epoxy finish and a custom shape, usually needs a higher MOQ than something simple, like a single-color Tyvek wristband. More customization means more setup steps. More setup steps push the floor quantity up.
How MOQ Affects Your Per-Unit Price
MOQ and pricing are closely linked for one reason: fixed costs get spread across units.
Say setting up a production run costs a supplier a fixed amount. Order 50 units, and that setup cost gets divided 50 ways. Order 500, and it's divided 500 ways, so each unit carries a much smaller slice of the cost. That's why a small custom batch almost always costs more per piece than a large one, even for the same product and design.
This also explains something that trips people up. Asking for "just 10 pieces" of a fully custom item often comes back at a steep per-piece price, even when the supplier is happy to make them. You're not really paying for 10 wristbands. You're paying for design proofing, the die, and the production setup with only 10 units to spread that cost across.

Combine designs into one production run. If you need three colorways of the same wristband, ask whether they can be made together as one order instead of three separate small ones. This often qualifies you for the combined MOQ and pricing tier.
Ask what's made locally versus overseas. A supplier with in-house digital printing or local screen printing in Singapore can often take on a smaller run. A supplier who must send your order through an overseas production and freight cycle usually can't. If your timeline is tight and your quantity is small, ask about this upfront rather than after you get the quote.

If you're already committing to a minimum order, a few small decisions can make that spend go further.
Order your different colorways or variants in the same production run, rather than spreading them across separate orders later. You'll likely pay setup costs once instead of several times. If you run events every year, plan your full year's quantity upfront instead of reordering small batches each time. One larger order often comes in at a noticeably better per-unit price than three smaller ones spread across the year. And lock in your final artwork before you request production. Late changes after approval can trigger a second round of proofing and setup fees.
